3,3-Dimethylbutyraldehyde is an organic compound that can be synthesized by the reaction of acetaldehyde with sodium. The product is a white solid that has a melting point of -29°C and a boiling point of 198°C. 3,3-Dimethylbutyraldehyde is reactive and soluble in water. It reacts with chloride to produce 3,3-dimethylbutyrate and hydrogen chloride. This compound was used in the synthesis of the active alkaloid butylbenzylisoquinoline. The study also found that it reacts with methanol to form anhydrous sodium methyl sulfone and 3-methylbutanol.
