1,4-Dimethylpiperazine is a heterocyclic organic compound that can be synthesized from piperazine and l-tartaric acid. It has been used for structural studies of the reaction mechanism of piperazine with amines, as well as for the synthesis of stable complexes. The 1,4-dimethylpiperazines are fluorescent compounds which exhibit intense fluorescence in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum. They have been used to study titration methods and have also been studied extensively in nmr spectroscopy. The hydroxyl group on 1,4-dimethylpiperazine is responsible for its stability in aqueous solution and its ability to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules such as pyridine or quinoline.
