Di-n-octylketone is a proton transporter that is found in the cell membrane of gram-negative bacteria. It is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of glyoxal, which is a type of aldehyde. Di-n-octylketone has been shown to be able to reversibly transport protons across the bacterial cell membrane and has been shown to have effects on metal carbonyls and zirconium oxide. This compound is produced by methyl ketones, which are aliphatic hydrocarbons that are thermally stable. These compounds can also be found in laboratory mice, where they produce fatty acids and particle matter.
