2,4-Dibromophenol is the result of a debromination reaction that takes place in humans. The compound was synthesized and tested for its ability to induce mutations in human serum. It has been shown that 2,4-dibromophenol can cause oxidative damage to DNA and proteins by binding to reactive oxygen species. The uptake of 2,4-dibromophenol into cells is mediated by the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. This compound also has a toxic effect on human liver cells and is excreted through urine samples. 2,4-Dibromophenol binds to DNA and causes it to undergo hydroxylation reactions, which may lead to the formation of carcinogenic metabolites.
