1,5-Dihydro-4-methoxy-2H-pyrrol-2-one (1,5DHP) is a compound that can be synthesized from the commercially available 2-(2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl)acetic acid. The synthesis of this compound has been achieved by deuteration of the starting material and stereoselective reduction. 1,5DHP has been shown to have anticancer activity in leukemia cells and to inhibit growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This compound binds to adenosine receptors with high affinity and acts as an agonist of these receptors. It also inhibits xanthine oxidase, which is an enzyme responsible for the production of uric acid.
