2,3-Diphenylmaleic anhydride (DPMA) is a white crystalline solid. It is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and ether. Thermal expansion of DPMA has been observed with the use of plates at different temperatures. The n-oxide form of DPMA can be produced by oxidation with nitric acid or radiation. 2,3-Diphenylmaleic anhydride shows optical properties that are similar to those of 3-nitrophthalic anhydride, but it is less dihedral than 3-nitrophthalic anhydride. 2,3-Diphenylmaleic anhydride can be used as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of other compounds such as plasticizers and pesticides. The inhibition mechanism for 2,3-diphenylmaleic anhydride is oxidation products and low energy processes.
