3,3-Dimethoxypropanenitrile is a synthetic drug that has been used as a pharmaceutical drug since the 1960s. It is used primarily in the treatment of acrylonitrile poisoning and cyanuric acidemia. This compound inhibits cell growth by binding to DNA. 3,3-Dimethoxypropanenitrile binds to DNA through its methyl group, which prevents DNA from forming hydrogen bonds with other molecules and thus prevents replication. The chloride ion of this compound stabilizes the negative charge on the molecule and allows it to bind to DNA more tightly. 3,3-Dimethoxypropanenitrile also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis.
