2,3-Dihydro-5-methylfuran is a functional group that contains a carbonyl group and can be used as an organocatalyst in cationic polymerization. It is produced by the reaction of hydrochloric acid with 2,4-dimethylaniline. The reaction takes place in water at room temperature. The product can then be dehydrated to form 2,4,6-trimethylquinoline and HCl gas. This process is repeated until all the starting material has been consumed. The nmr spectra of this molecule have been characterized and it has been found to isomerize between the cis and trans forms.
