(S)-6,7-Dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3-isoquinolinecarboxylic acid hydrochloride is a stereoisomer of haemanthamine. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of haemanthamine and has been used as a biochemical tool for studying the biosynthesis of β-amino acids. (S)-6,7-Dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3-isoquinolinecarboxylic acid hydrochloride has also been found to be effective against age related macular degeneration.
