2,3-Difluorophenylalanine is a fluorinated amino acid that has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of bacterial growth in vitro. It is not toxic to humans and does not inhibit the growth of human cells. 2,3-Difluorophenylalanine inhibits eukaryotic protein synthesis by competing with phenylalanine for incorporation into proteins. The effects of this compound on bacteria are mediated by its ability to block the incorporation of phenylalanine into proteins, which prevents the synthesis of essential cellular products such as glycoproteins and enzymes.
