2,5-Difluoroterephthalic acid is a bilaterally symmetrical polyester that is synthesized by the nucleophilic addition of difluoride to terephthalic acid. Difluoroterephthalic acid has a hydrophobic nature and can be used in the synthesis of polyethers with a high molecular weight. It is also able to undergo polymerization reactions at temperatures up to 120°C. 2,5-Difluoroterephthalic acid can be hydrolyzed to form 2,5-difluoro-4-chloro terephthalic acid, which can then be converted into 1,2-bis(trichloromethyl)benzene.
