1-(4-{(E)-2-[4-(Dioctylamino)phenyl]vinyl}phenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoroethanone (TFPVE) is a fluorescent chemical that can be detected with optical sensors. It is used as an indicator for oxygen and has been shown to be useful in polymerized optical fiber sensors. This chemical is a non-fluorescent compound that undergoes an oxidation reaction to form the fluorescent product when it reacts with oxygen. TFPVE also catalyzes the polymerization of the monomeric oxybenzoyl spacer, which forms the backbone of a polymerized optical fiber sensor. The catalytic activity of TFPVE may be due to its ability to bind two oxygens at once, making it a dioxygenase.
