2-Ethylthiophenol is a hydrogenated organosulfur compound that is used as a reagent in synthetic chemistry for the conversion of hydrocarbons to more valuable products. It can also be used to desulfurize olefins and carbonyl compounds. 2-Ethylthiophenol reacts with ruthenium complexes to give thermally stable, functionalized molecules. 2-Ethylthiophenol has been shown to cleave bonds in organic molecules with the aid of active oxygen, such as hydroxyl radicals and peroxides. The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet known due to the lack of x-ray structures of 2-ethylthiophenol.
