Ethyl 3-(3-pyridyl)acrylate is a synthon that is used in the synthesis of enaminones and β-unsaturated aldehydes. It is also used in the synthesis of piperidines, which are analogs to natural products. This compound has been found to have antitumor activity against lung carcinoma cells in vitro. The modifications of this compound include reactions with piperidine and amines, which can lead to the formation of new compounds with different biological activities. These modifications are possible because ethyl 3-(3-pyridyl)acrylate is chemically stable and has a low molecular weight.
