Fluorometholone is a synthetic corticosteroid. It has been used for the treatment of skin diseases, such as eczema and psoriasis, and systemic conditions like asthma. Fluorometholone has anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of inflammatory substances in the body. In vitro assays have shown that fluorometholone inhibits the production of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory mediators involved in skin diseases and asthma. The drug also binds to receptors on cells in the thymus gland and prevents corticosteroid synthesis, leading to decreased levels of these hormones. Fluorometholone is metabolized by glucocorticoid enzymes and is partially inactivated by metabolic processes.
