Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the cephalosporin class. It is active against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and some anaerobic bacteria. Cefuroxime is used to treat infections of the ear, skin, throat, respiratory tract, urinary tract, bone and joint spaces, and genital areas. It can also be used to prevent bacterial endocarditis in people with certain heart valve problems or to treat pneumonia. Cefuroxime has a low risk of allergic reactions in comparison to other antibiotics. This drug has been shown to be safe for use in children from 2 months old up to 12 years old that are taking it for 7 days or less. The drug is not recommended for use in infants younger than 2 months old because their kidneys are immature and cannot effectively process the medication.
