Apremilast is a synthetic drug that belongs to the class of phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitors. It is used in the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Apremilast has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation and erythema, as well as inhibiting keratinocyte proliferation and activation of T cells. Apremilast is able to inhibit the activity of phosphodiesterase 4 enzymes by binding to them, which prevents the breakdown of cyclic nucleotides such as cAMP and cGMP. This leads to increased levels of these intracellular second messengers, which are involved in many cellular processes including cell growth, differentiation, and inflammation.
