5-Ethylthiophene-2-boronic acid (ETBA) is a boronic acid that can reversibly bind to a wide range of organic compounds. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties and is being investigated as an additive for detergents, marine bacterium screening, and research. ETBA has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the active site of enzymes such as 5-lipoxygenase in marine bacterium. This mechanism may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals or chelate metal ions.
