1-Ethyl-4-(4-nitrophenyl)piperazine (1-EPNP) is a quaternary salt that is an organic solvent. It has been shown to be active against malaria in animals, and may have potential for use as a therapeutic agent for human malaria. 1-EPNP has antimalarial activity that is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit the Plasmodium falciparum erythrocytic cycle. It is structurally similar to chloroquine and binds to the same site on the parasite's enzyme, but with a higher affinity than chloroquine. The compound also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their DNA and preventing transcription and replication.
