Ethyl 2-methyl-4H-furo[3,2-b]pyrrole-5-carboxylate is a colorless liquid with a fruity odor. It has been shown to react with nucleophiles such as amines and thiols to form alkylated products. The chemical shifts in the proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum of this compound were found to be similar to those for ethyl 2-methyl-4H-furo[3,2-b]pyrrole-5(6H)-one, suggesting that it belongs to the same class of compounds. The major peaks in the mass spectra are at m/z=158 and m/z=114. This compound is also subjected to hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid.
