1-Ethyl-4-fluorobenzene is a compound that has been shown to be an effective tryptophan binding ligand. It is used in vitro to study enzyme reactions and the interaction of peptides with their binding site. 1-Ethyl-4-fluorobenzene binds to the acceptor by hydrophobic interactions and covalent bonds, and it also reacts with aldehydes to form 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines. The reaction rate can be increased by using mesoporous techniques to increase the surface area.
