It is found in many vegetable oils and animal fats. Cis-5,8,11,14,17-Eicosapentaenoic acid methyl ester has been studied extensively for its use in biodiesel production. In particular it has been used to produce ethyl esters which are more suitable for diesel engines than the original triglycerides. Cis-5,8,11,14,17-Eicosapentaenoic acid methyl ester has also been shown to be effective in immobilizing silver ions by forming silver complexes with the carboxylic groups on the fatty acid molecule.
