Ethyl methacrylate is an amide with the chemical formula CH2=C(CH3)COOCH3. It is a monomer that is used in the synthesis of polymers and plastics. It can be used as a diagnostic agent for bacteria, because it interacts with nucleophilic attack by forming a hydrogen bond to the target cell wall. Ethyl methacrylate also has water permeability, which makes it useful for microcapsules that are designed to release their content under conditions of high humidity.
