EDTA is a chelating agent that binds metal ions, such as calcium, magnesium and iron. It is used to treat metal poisoning and to remove excess metals from the body. EDTA is also used for intravenous fluid replacement in patients with kidney failure or severe dehydration. EDTA is used to prepare biological samples for analysis by removing traces of metal ions, which may interfere with the results. The optimum concentration of EDTA for chelation therapy has been found to be between 0.1-1 mM. This drug can be administered intravenously or intramuscularly and should not be taken orally because it will bind to tooth enamel and cause dental problems.
EDTA has been shown to have beneficial effects on autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
