Ethyl trans-alpha-cyanocinnamate is a reactive compound that is used as a coating for paper or plastics. It has been shown to be a functional component of coatings that can react with nitro groups in the presence of heat, light, and moisture to release the cyanide ion. The reaction mechanism of this compound has been determined using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. Ethyl trans-alpha-cyanocinnamate is also used in the production of choline esters by reacting with choline in the presence of phosphorus pentoxide.
