Estra-5(10),9(11)-diene-3,17-dione 3-ethylene ketal is a synthetic drug substance that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in the synthesis of other drugs and is an intermediate for the synthesis of grignard reagents. Estra-5(10),9(11)-diene-3,17-dione 3-ethylene ketal can be prepared by epoxidation of estradiol with ethylene oxide followed by dehydration with hydrogen peroxide. This reaction produces a molecule with an a ring and three stereogenic centers. This molecule can then be reacted with a Grignard reagent to produce the desired product.
