Ramipril, also known as (-)-N-[1-(R)-Ethoxycarbonxyl-3-phenylpropyl]-D-alanine, is a drug used in treating high blood pressure. It is an ACE inhibitor that prevents the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II by blocking the enzyme ACE. Ramipril is an amino acid with an ethoxycarbonyl group on the R carbon and a 3-phenylpropyl side chain. The stereospecificity of this drug is determined by the "R" configuration at C2 of the alanine moiety.
Ramipril has been shown to be effective against high blood pressure, but it may cause adverse reactions such as cough, dizziness, muscle pain or weakness, nausea or vomiting, and headache.
