2-Ethyl-3-methylmaleic anhydride is a thiohydroxamic acid that has shown antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is an oxygenated compound that has been shown to have antibacterial properties in the treatment of epidermoid carcinoma. This compound was first synthesized by reacting naphthalene with maleic anhydride, which was then oxidized to the final product. 2-Ethyl-3-methylmaleic anhydride has been found to be stable in a variety of solvents, including chloroform, ethyl acetate, benzene, and methanol. The chemical structure of this compound consists of branched chains, which may account for its high efficiency. 2-Ethyl-3-methylmaleic anhydride is also anticancerous and can be used as a possible chemopreventive agent against tobacco smoke.
