1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium p-toluenesulfonate is a solvent with an electrochemical window of 1.2V and a thermal expansion coefficient of 0.0134x10^5 K^-1, which is useful for the study of organic solvents and their interactions with different types of materials. This solvent has been used in computational simulations to demonstrate that it can be used to form monolayers on silicon dioxide surfaces to prevent direct contact between metal electrodes and the electrolyte solution, preventing corrosion. It also has been investigated as a possible means for solubilizing fatty acids for use in biofuel production. The viscosity of this solvent is relatively low, making it suitable for plant tissue work and deionized water experiments.
