Ethyl 2-cyano-3-oxo-butanoate is a synthetic agent that has been shown to have potential anti-cancer effects in vitro and in vivo. It inhibits the cell cycle by disrupting microtubule formation, which is necessary for the transport of molecules and organelles. The synthesis of ethyl 2-cyano-3-oxo-butanoate involves the condensation of 3-hydroxypropionitrile with furan, followed by heating to produce an enolate. This compound is then hydrolyzed to produce the desired product. Furan, a heterocyclic ring system, has been shown to be carcinogenic when studied in rats. The toxicity of this compound was also demonstrated by its ability to induce clevidipine toxicity in lung cancer cells in culture.
