Ethyl 2-amino-4-hydroxypyrimidine-5-carboxylate is a synthon for the synthesis of ethyl 4,4'-diaminobenzenesulfonate. It has been shown to be cytotoxic against malignant cells in vitro and against mouse leukemia cells in vivo. Magnetic particles were used to demonstrate that this compound induces lysis of cells by binding to the surface of the cell membrane. The mechanism of action may be through inhibition of protein synthesis or by blocking DNA synthesis. The chemical formula for this compound is CHNO.
