1-Ethyl-2-phenylindole is an aromatic heterocycle that has been shown to have a cytotoxic effect on human liver cancer cells. 1-Ethyl-2-phenylindole is prepared by the reaction of benzaldehyde and 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran with sodium methoxide in methanol. The reaction time for this synthesis is about 20 hours at room temperature. 1-Ethyl-2-phenylindole also reacts with chloride ions to form a chlorinated derivative that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cells from human liver cancer. This compound contains both methyl and phenyl groups, which are responsible for its cytotoxic activity.
