Furfuryl glycidyl ether (FGEE) is a reactive chemical that is used as a cross-linking agent. It can react with multiple targets, such as metal surfaces, diols and polymers. FGEE is used to prepare a thermoreversible polymer film for use in the treatment of cervical cancer. The polymer film is prepared by reacting FGEE with an amine, which reacts reversibly with the hydroxyl group on the polymer backbone. This reaction creates a covalent bond between the FGEE and the polymer surface. FGEE can also be used to inhibit the growth of bacteria on metal surfaces by reacting with sulfides present in bacteria. The inhibition of bacterial growth is due to its ability to cross-link sulfide groups in proteins, preventing them from functioning properly.
