5-Fluoro-2-methylphenyl isothiocyanate (5FMIT) is a chemical compound that has been found to act as a potent and selective inhibitor of the enzyme formic acid oxidase. It has been shown to have potential in the treatment of narcolepsy, an autoimmune disease, and other conditions. 5FMIT has also been found to inhibit tumor necrosis factor alpha production by human lymphocytes and to modulate immune responses. The mechanism of action for 5FMIT is not well understood but may be due to its ability to inhibit formic acid oxidase, which leads to decreased levels of formic acid and a reduction in inflammatory responses. 5FMIT has also been shown to have antinociceptive properties in animal models.
