6-Fluoroveratraldehyde is a chiral compound that is synthesized from 6-fluoroacetophenone. This synthesis provides an efficient method for the preparation of polyphenols with the desired stereochemistry. The nitro group can be introduced by reaction with sodium nitrite in acid solution and then reacted with an amine to form the corresponding amide. The use of halogens as alkylating agents provides an easy way to introduce different functional groups, such as chloro, bromo, or iodo. 6-Fluoroveratraldehyde has been shown to protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury by activating nuclear factor κB (NFκB) and inhibiting protein kinase C (PKC).
