4-Fluorobenzylmagnesium chloride is a regiospecific Grignard reagent that can be prepared using primary amines and chlorides. It is easily synthesized by the addition of magnesium turnings to a solution of an appropriate alcohol in THF at 0°C. The generated Grignard reagent reacts with the desired amine in THF to produce the corresponding 4-fluorobenzylmagnesium chloride derivative. 4-Fluorobenzylmagnesium chloride has been shown to be an effective and selective coupling agent for synthesis of imidazole rings and isothiocyanates. It has also been used as a sample preparation agent in gas chromatography, as an acidolysis agent, and as a reducing agent.
