Flezelastine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is a selective inhibitor of the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2. It has been shown to have a number of beneficial effects in degenerative diseases, including for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Flezelastine binds to receptors on the surface of cells and blocks their activity. It also inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which are involved in pain, fever, and inflammation. Flezelastine has also been shown to function as an antagonist at the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which is expressed on human monocytes and macrophages. Flezelastine may be useful for prevention or treatment of cancer or infectious diseases due to its ability to bind with high affinity to the CB2 receptor found on rat liver microsomes.
