Ferric chloride is a chemical compound that can be used as an oxidizer in wastewater treatment. It is also used in the production of 2-aminoterephthalic acid, which is a precursor to polyester. Ferric chloride has been shown to have a high chemical stability and can be used in reactions with sodium carbonate as an oxidation catalyst. This chemical has also been shown to cause cell lysis when combined with water vapor and metal hydroxides, such as phosphorus pentoxide. The reaction mechanism for ferric chloride is not well understood but the thermal expansion of water may play a role in this reaction.
