4-Fluoro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (4FNBF) is a fluorescent derivative of the amino acid GABA, which is a neurotransmitter. 4FNBF has been used as a potential biomarker to detect the presence of gamma-aminobutyric acid in human serum and as an analytical reagent for the detection of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA). The fluorescence intensity of 4FNBF increases when it binds to LPA, and this can be detected using a photomultiplier tube. A sample preparation method involving liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has also been reported for the analysis of fatty acids in biological samples. This compound has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli.
