Fmoc-L-leucinol is a potent antimicrobial agent with activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is a carbamate that binds to the lipid membrane of the cell, which disrupts the integrity of the membrane and inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. Fmoc-L-leucinol has been shown to be effective against bacterial species including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis, and Enterobacter cloacae. It also has hemolytic activity in mammalian cells and can cause cell death. Fmoc-L-leucinol also displays dichroism spectra in biological media such as water and can be used to identify pseudopeptides.
