Fmoc-L-methionine sulfoxide is a synthetic amino acid that is used to study the interactions between proteins and enzymes. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the sulfhydryl group on methionine. Fmoc-L-methionine sulfoxide may be useful in preventing bacterial infection because it inhibits hemolytic activity, which is caused by lysozyme and other enzymes found in human blood. Fmoc-L-methionine sulfoxide can also be used for sample preparation, such as purification of peptides or tetramerization of proteins. This synthetic amino acid is also able to act as an antimicrobial peptide due to its ability to form a covalent bond with the sulfhydryl group on methionine.
