3-Fluoro-4-methylbenzaldehyde (3FMBA) is a chemical compound that has been synthesized and crystallized in the form of a white, needle-shaped crystal. 3FMBA is an inhibitor of cancer cell growth with a novel mechanism of action. It was found to be effective against cisplatin resistant cells. The structure of 3FMBA was determined by x-ray crystallography and computational methods. This compound has three hydrogen bonds with other molecules, which are necessary for its biological activity. 3FMBA binds to the cisplatin binding site on DNA, preventing the formation of platinum-DNA adducts while retaining the ability to bind to nitro groups. The potential anticancer activity of this compound is due to its inhibition of topoisomerase II and DNA synthesis in cancer cells.
