4-Fluorophenetole is a halogenated aromatic compound that has been shown to be an excellent nucleophile. It can be used as a reagent in organic synthesis, for the elimination of alkylhalides or the transfer of activated aromatic compounds. 4-Fluorophenetole is also used as a precursor for fluorinated aromatics such as 2-fluoroanisole and 2,4-difluorobenzoic acid. 4-Fluorophenetole is oxidized electrochemically to give fluoroaromatic intermediates that are useful for nitration reactions. 4-Fluorophenetole also reacts with peracetic acid to produce peracetic acid fluoride ion, which has been shown to have some antibacterial properties.
