9-Fluorobenzo(a)Pyrene is a chemical that has been shown to be mutagenic and tumorigenic. It is also found in cigarette smoke and fossil fuels. The molecular mechanism of 9-Fluorobenzo(a)Pyrene's carcinogenic activity has been studied by the use of population, carcinogenesis, and fluorine studies. 9-Fluorobenzo(a)Pyrene can bind to cytochrome P450 enzymes, which may lead to the production of reactive oxygen species and the initiation of a cascade of reactions that can result in DNA damage or cell death. This chemical also causes tumors to form when it is administered orally to rats at doses as low as 2 mg/kg/day.
