1-(2-Fluoro-4-nitrophenyl)piperazine (1FPP) is a potent, broad spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting the synthesis of protein. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit and prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 1 FP has been shown to be active against Cryptococcus neoformans and Cephalosporium parapsilosis, which are both fungi. 1 FP has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes. 1 FP has potent antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
