1-(4-Fluorophenyl)biguanide hydrochloride is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the class of biguanides. It is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 111°C. It has been shown to be active against staphylococcus and conformationally sensitive strains of E. coli in the presence of dodecyl sulfoxide and dimethylformamide, but not against escherichia or imidazoline-sensitive strains. 1-(4-Fluorophenyl)biguanide hydrochloride has also been shown to have long-term effects on the growth of food borne bacteria when used as a preservative in ethylene-sensitive packaging materials.
