5-Fluoro-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]furan is an isoquinoline derivative that has shown to be a potent inhibitor of the 5-ht2c receptor. This compound has been shown to reduce the severity of arthritis in mice by suppressing inflammation and preventing joint destruction. 5-Fluoro-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]furan has also been used in clinical trials for treatment of asthma and pulmonary disease. The compound is synthesized by Grignard reaction with 4-(chloromethyl) benzene and ethylmagnesium chloride, followed by reduction with lithium aluminum hydride. It crystallizes as a white solid at room temperature.
