Fluridone is an herbicide that belongs to the class of chlorophenoxy acid herbicides. It inhibits the growth of algae by interfering with the process of photosynthesis. Fluridone has been shown to inhibit chlorophyll a. production and to block carotenoid biosynthesis, which are vital for plant growth. This inhibition leads to a decrease in mass and weight gain in mammals, as well as congestive heart failure. Fluridone also blocks the activity of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which is responsible for the synthesis of phenols in plants, inhibiting enzyme activities and transcriptional regulation.
