It also has been shown to reduce gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the hippocampus and striatum, which may be due to its ability to inhibit glutamic acid decarboxylase. H-D-Glu(Gly-OH)-OH is a potent antagonist of glutamate, binding competitively at the glutamate site on ionotropic receptors. It also inhibits acidic pH and calcium ion concentrations, which are necessary for ionotropic receptor activation.
