Glycidyl oleate is a polycarboxylic acid that is used as an analytical reagent. It has a viscosity of about 1,000 cP and its melting point is about 130-140°C. Glycidyl oleate may be prepared by reacting methylglyoxal with ethylene glycol in the presence of sodium hydroxide. This reaction can be monitored by measuring the elimination rate of hydroxide ions from a solution of sodium hydroxide. The elimination rate should decrease as the reaction progresses. Glycidyl oleate can also be synthesized by reacting boron nitride with sodium hydroxide, which forms glycidyl borates. These compounds are then hydrolyzed to give glycidyl oleates.
